Summer Music Festivals in Aotearoa: A Raver’s Guide to 5 of the Season’s Most Exciting Psychedelic Gatherings.

Aotearoa’s Summer Music Festival season is a cultural heartbeat – a mix of bass-heavy nights, psychedelic wonderlands, and multi-day celebrations set against some of the most stunning landscapes in the world. From Northland’s hidden valleys to Golden Bay’s wild bush, these festivals have grown into defining rituals for thousands of local and international travellers alike.

Here’s a look at five of the country’s most iconic summer festivals and what to expect this season.

Lost in Paradise

Dates: January 2nd – 6th, 2026. Location: Northland. Years Active: Running annually since at least 2018.

Lost in Paradise has steadily become one of Aotearoa’s defining psychedelic gatherings, drawing a loyal community of travellers who return each year for an experience that feels both intimate and intentional. What began as a small, grassroots celebration has evolved into a multi-day journey shaped by the vision of NZ PsyTribe, a collective that has spent years cultivating a distinctly authentic expression of psychedelic culture.

The organisers’ history is tightly interwoven with the festival’s identity. NZ PsyTribe has built its reputation on a spirit of adventure, hosting gatherings that range from deep-bush sessions to the kind of off-grid experiences that become whispers within the community. One tale often resurfacing in conversation speaks of ravers being ferried to an island in the Hauraki Gulf for an all-night party, and that blend of mystery, ambition, and creativity continues to shape the ethos of Lost in Paradise today.

Held amongst giant rolling hills on a cattle farm in Northland, the festival gives equal weight to its rural setting and its sound. Each year the site is reshaped with hand-built décor, large-scale visual installations, and the distinctive Opus Analog Sound System; long associated with NZ PsyTribe events and central to the festival’s audio identity. The result is an environment built for immersion, where the natural landscape and the dancefloor operate as a single space.

The 2026 edition will span three days and two nights, bringing together a curated mix of psychedelic art, deep techno, and the full breadth of Psytrance. Rather than relying on specific headliners, the programme reflects the organisers’ long-standing commitment to authenticity: a lineup built around artists who understand the culture, the sound, and the community that has grown around it. For many attendees, Lost in Paradise is less a festival and more a return – a chance to reconnect with a tribe that has been building its own story for nearly a decade.

Twisted Frequency

Dates: December 30th 2025 – January 3rd, 2026.Location: Cobb Valley, Golden Bay. Years Active: Active since at least 2015, now one of Aotearoa’s fastest growing underground festivals.

Twisted Frequency has evolved into one of the South Island’s most influential underground gatherings, a festival shaped by experimentation, community, and a deep love for boundary breaking sound. Since its emergence in the mid 2010s, it has steadily carved out its place as a cornerstone of Aotearoa’s alternative festival landscape – celebrated for its DIY spirit, inclusive culture, and fearless approach to electronic music.

This year’s musical programme reflects exactly what Twisted does best: championing the weird, the innovative, and the proudly unpolished corners of the underground. The 2026 line up pulls together a cross-section of producers, DJs, live acts, and experimental performers who thrive outside the mainstream. Expect everything from late-night bass mutations and frequency bending live sets to driving techno, left-field electronica, and the kind of improvised hardware jams you only ever hear in places like Cobb Valley.

The landscape remains one of the festival’s greatest collaborators. Encircled by native bush and dramatic valley walls, with a cool, winding river threading through the site, the Cobb Valley offers a natural refuge between dancefloor sessions. Festival goers drift to the water to swim, reset, and connect.

At the core of Twisted Frequency is the crew who build it. A dedicated collective of artists, technicians, visionaries, and hands-on makers pour themselves into every detail; from custom built stages and interactive art to the lighting, sound, and thoughtful touches that give the festival its unmistakable character. Their commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and genuine community connection is what keeps thousands returning each New Year, ready to step back into the strange, vibrant, and beautiful world of Twisted.

Dimension

Dates: January 30th – February 2nd, 2026. Location: Nukutawhiti, Northland Years Active: Celebrating it’s 10thanniversery (Woohoo!)

Dimension has become Aotearoa’s defining boutique psychedelic experience – a four-day immersion into psytrance, bass, dub, techno, and expansive chillout realms. Over the past decade, it has grown into one of the country’s most respected psychedelic festivals, celebrated for its lush riverside location, visionary stage design, and a community ethos grounded in consciousness, creativity, and care.

The 2026 edition marks a major milestone: Dimension’s 10th anniversary. To honour the occasion, the organisers are returning to the pulse that started it all – pure, driving psytrance. This year’s line up is the biggest in the festival’s history, featuring global heavyweights like Ace Ventura, Ajja, and Jumpstreet, alongside a powerful wave of emerging producers, live acts, and local heroes who carry the next generation of psychedelic sound. The “10th Dimension” is a deliberate homecoming, a celebration of the genre that shaped the festival’s identity and continues to inspire its evolution.

Set beside the magnificent Mangakāhia River and surrounded by native bush and rolling farmland, the festival site is a huge part of Dimension’s magic. The water becomes a gathering point during the day, offering a grounding, cooling sanctuary between dancefloor adventures.

As night falls, the zones transform into glowing worlds, each crafted with meticulous detail by a crew who pour their hearts into every installation, light sculpture, and sonic experience. With multiple zones and more than 100 artists, Dimension continues to push the boundaries of sound, art, and transformational festival culture. But what truly sets it apart is the passion of the team behind it; people who live and breathe psychedelic music, who care deeply about the land, and who are committed to creating a memorable, meaningful experience for every person who is welcomed into the festival’s orbit.

Northern Bass

Date: December 30th – 31st, 2005. Location: Kaiwaka/Mangawhai Region. Years Active: Running since 2011.

Northern Bass stands as the North Island’s iconic New Year’s bass festival; a high-energy celebration of drum & bass, hip-hop, grime, and cutting-edge electronic music. What began in 2011 as a single night party in Haruru Falls has grown into a multi stage, multi-day summer ritual that attracts thousands of bass hungry festivalgoers every year.

For 2025/26, Northern Bass returns with a refreshed format: two huge nights anchored by the legendary Jungle Stage, with attendance capped at a mere intimate 6,000 people. This year’s line-up leans heavily into the festival’s roots, showcasing heavyweight DnB selectors, international MCs, and a wave of rising producers pushing the boundaries of jungle, halftime, and grime. Expect everything from deep rollers to high-octane neurofunk, alongside hip-hop crews and electronic artists who bring the perfect balance of rhythm and rave.

Set just over an hour north of Auckland, the festival’s home in Kaiwaka gives it a character all its own. Surrounded by rolling farmland, freshwater ponds, and open skies, the site offers a rare blend of rural calm and bass-driven chaos. With camping, food trucks, hot showers, and all the essentials for a Jungletastic New Year’s escape, Northern Bass continues to deliver one of Aotearoa’s most pumping NYE festival experiences.

Yatra

Date: February 27th – March 2nd 2026. Location: Cobb Valley, Golden Bay. Years Active: Running for at least four years.

Yatra Festival is the South Island’s sacred psychedelic pilgrimage – an intimate, heart-led gathering that returns for its fourth edition in 2026. Held in the breath taking Cobb Valley, Yatra offers a four-day journey into sound, spirit, and community, set against one of the South Island’s most pristine natural backdrops. Running from February 27th to March 2nd, 2026, this year’s theme is “In Ritual with Mo:Dem” – a landmark collaboration with the visionary team behind Croatia’s legendary Mo:Dem Festival. Together, they’ll co-create a deeply immersive experience that merges the wild heart of Aotearoa with the global pulse of psytrance culture.

Yatra’s musical focus remains rooted in psytrance and progressive, with a line up that blends international heavyweights and local sonic shamans. The festival also features art installations, workshops, healing spaces, and a vibrant marketplace – all designed to support transformation, connection, and celebration.

The Cobb Valley itself is a sacred part of the experience. With its winding river, native bush, and mountainous embrace, it offers a natural sanctuary for reflection, dance, and co-creation.
