How to Measure your Feet at Home:

If you have ever had the pleasure of putting on a pair of shoes that have been measured properly for your feet; you will know the difference the shoes make to your whole body. Fortunately, most specialised shoe shops and department stores will have a Brannock Device to measure feet accurately, but if you can’t find one anywhere; it’s simple to take your measurements at home.

Tools you will need: a pencil, two pieces of blank paper, and a ruler or tape measure.

  • Firstly, put on the socks or pantyhose you will be wearing with your new shoes. Place the blank paper onto solid ground, then have your helper trace your foot onto the paper. To do this accurately, you need to be standing straight to get the full length of your foot.
  • With the ruler, measure your traced foot from the heel to the longest toe, one foot will likely be longer or wider than the other. This is totally normal, so don’t freak out! Write down your findings.
  • The best way to get the width measurement of you foot is to place the tape measure, as flat as you can, on to the floor. Line up the widest part of the ball of your foot with the tape measure. Bring one end of the tape past your big toe and the other end past the ball joint and bring both ends together. Do this for both feet. Write down the numbers.
  • Check the size charts of individual shoe listings. If one foot is longer than the other; go for the size of the longer foot. If your feet are wider, it is recommended to get a pair of shoes half a size to one size larger.

Top Tips for Accurate Foot Measurement:

  • Timing is Key: Your feet tend to swell throughout the day, reaching their maximum size by the end of the day. So, it’s best to measure your feet during this time for the most accurate fit.
  • Secure Your Setup: To ensure accuracy, secure your paper with tape to prevent it from moving while you are measuring.
  • Proper Posture: Stand straight with a slight bend in your knee, or sit with your foot firmly planted on the ground. This helps in getting a true measure of your foot size.
  • Size Chart Comparison: Always refer to the size chart of the specific shoe brand you’re considering. Compare your foot measurements with the chart to find your perfect fit.

Remember, most shoe sizes vary between brands. It’s always a good idea to check the brand’s size chart before making a purchase. Also, it’s quite common for one foot to be slightly larger than the other. So, always use the measurements of the larger foot when comparing sizes.
